INSANE HOPE: By Jim Mulholland

The levees stand tall again
Holding back tears
Bottling up anger, diluting betrayal
Allowing many to forget

That the dry land is a lie
Made possible by pipes and pumps
Patiently awaiting Katrina’s children
Or global warming’s gradual flood

Has a rainbow really appeared
Promising disaster’s demise
Assuring God’s providence
Making rebuilding worthy

In the midst of this uncertainty
These champions of optimism still sweat
Under the levees, in the damp soil
Convinced they change the world

What should we say to them
These hopelessly hopeful heroes
That their toil is insanity
Their hope is in vain

Or should we applaud
That they do today’s deed
That they ignore tomorrow’s danger
Seeing rainbows where there are none
